The IOC Diploma in Sports Nutrition is a postgraduate program which requires a good knowledge of human nutrition and metabolism as well as some knowledge of sports and exercise science. Selected candidates typically have a bachelor's degree or equivalent in nutrition, dietetics, life sciences, medicine, or other areas. All applications are reviewed by the Admission Committee, so other certifications are accepted at the discretion of this committee.
The language of the diploma is in English, so students whose mother tongue is not English must meet the language prerequisites.
The 'IOC Diploma in Sport Nutrition' is awarded by the International Olympic Committee (www.olympic.org) as part of the IOC Medical Commission program. The program is offered under the supervision of the International Academic Advisory Council who provide advisory services according to the academic standards of the IOC Diploma in Sports Nutrition, including review of application requests, quality assurance of program content and student evaluation . More information about the members of the Council is found under the title “Advisory Board” on the website (www.sportsoracle.com)
The International Olympic Committee cannot award Master's degrees, but the content and level of the Diploma program is equivalent to about two-thirds of the content of a master's program at a university. There are seven universities (in the United States, the United Kingdom and Australia) that have an agreement to accept credits from the IOC Diploma in Sports Nutrition to continue and convert their studies to a Master's degree.
The objective of the IOC Diploma in Sports Nutrition is to offer an academic program which will assist the development of Sports Nutrition professionals so that they can support athletes with evidence-based sports nutrition information. The program is available worldwide and has the advantage of being formed by an international group of experts in Sports Nutrition. The objective of the program is to work in harmony with academic institutions and professional bodies in nutrition to complement existing programs and contribute a new opportunity to develop in the field of Sports Nutrition.
The terms " certify " and " accredit " have different definitions in each country. In some countries, there are professional organizations such as the Mexican Sports Nutrition Federation seeking to guide the training and practice of professionals in Sports Nutrition in their country. In other countries there are programs that provide the desired level of competence to be qualified as a Sports Nutritionist, however given the lack of quality programs in Mexico, the FMND recognizes the IOC Diploma in Sports Nutrition as the best program to specialize in Sports Nutrition and complement existing programs.
The workload for the entire graduate program is about 1,200 hours, spread over two years of study. This corresponds to approximately two thirds of the workload that is normally required to complete a master's degree at a university. However, the time it takes to complete all online lectures, read all papers and prepare assignments can vary greatly from student to student. Clearly, some people may achieve satisfactory performance within considerably less time, but other students may need to invest more time. Although there are some specific deadlines for the delivery of certain assignments, in general students have flexibility to choose how they distribute the workload during the year.
There are 10 modules for each year of study; each module is one month long, so the program runs from January to October of each year. There are five assignments for each year and these are delivered every two months. The type of Assignments vary, including: presentations, posters, abstracts, comments on scientific papers, and analysis of research papers. Assignments should be uploaded electronically through the student portal on the website. Email feedback is sent as well as website publication.
An exam is conducted each year that is mailed to students and they have 24 hours to complete and return. The exam takes place in October.
One of the benefits of being a member of the FMND Level 2 (for nutrition graduates and related areas) is the 10% discount on the total cost of the IOC Diploma in Sports Nutrition. To apply for your scholarship you must :
